Puzzles #652, #653 & #654 - IPC Round 3 (Killer Doppelblock, Clone Snake)

Like last year, I helped contribute to the Indian Puzzle Championship this year. If you're interested in seeing the rest of the set, including bonus puzzles, check the link for details on how.

Round 3 was themed on taking sudoku variants and applying them to non-sudoku puzzles. I put myself down for number placement, wanting to make a puzzle of a type that has arithmetic normally combined with killer cages. I thought about a few types before settling on Doppelblock. I also signed up for clone Snake since I knew the combination had potential from old, old Islands of Insight rule prototyping. In fact, now that that game isn't getting new content, I know a lot of these old unused puzzles will stay unused, so retain all the rights to them. I've gone through my archive and have about 80 puzzles in this category I think are good enough to share, so at some point I'll have to set up solving interfaces/write rules/share them.

Anyway, Killer Doppelblock! Standard Doppelblock rules apply. Additionally, all the numbers inside a cage add up to the number in the corner of the cage. This is a pretty cool combination, where the different ways of getting partial sums interact in some really cool ways. This was worth 65 points.

Clone Snake: Standard Snake rules apply, with given endpoints and an unknown length. Two cages of the same shape and orientation must have the same arrangement of snake and not snake cells. The first puzzle here is actually one of those old IOI prototype puzzles, since I added it to the organization sheet after a couple failed constructions, to at least have a puzzle in the slot. I put a note that this was from a couple years ago and I didn't think anyone at the IPC would have seen it before. A few hours later, I finally turned up a satisfactory second puzzle, and added that to the sheet to provide an option for which puzzle to use. Prasanna chose both, worth 30 and 50 points.

Puzzle #611 - Crabby Beach (Doppelblock)

Before WPC 2023, I ran a Puzzle Getchu!, a contest themed on Ape Escape. I had intended to queue these puzzles for posting before WPC, but didn't have the time. Better late than never!

The seventh level is Crabby Beach - a relatively smaller level. Doppelblock is at first an incongruous choice, until Beach -> Sand -> Sandwich -> sum between clues from Doppelblock. It's still a stretch, but a justifiable stretch. This puzzle was worth 10 points - I really wanted to have a good break-in using no edge clues, as Doppelblock almost always relies on edge clues. I ended up only using prime numbers, and went through a lot of struggle keeping that theme alive.

Puzzles #505 & #506 - 24 Hour Doppelblocks

I also provided a Doppelblock puzzle (worth 60 points) and "filler" puzzle that went unused for the 2020 2023 24 Hour Puzzle Championship. I ended up resorting to some given digits in the main puzzle since I ran out of possible clues (lazy past me) but since it could stay on-theme and let me remove another clue, I liked it enough.

Penpa used for the second image so the givens aren't green.

Puzzle #386 - Almost... (Doppelblock)

I actually made this Doppelblock almost a month ago, but didn't post it because it wasn't quite the theme I was going for. Rather than sit on a nice construction indefinitely because I had to clue R5, I figured I should post the puzzle now. Except somehow I posted the wrong version, no longer have the right version, and came up with this working puzzle from the same start. Oops.
I'll probably keep trying to get that theme to work later- it would be really slick and I'm sure it's possible.

In other puzzle news, I haven't had too much constructing time lately and what I have has been going towards the same two projects. One of them will hopefully surface within a year, and the other I'll publicize once it gets closer to completion. Let's just say that it aims to address one of my biggest complaints for now...
There's also been a third project of a Chip's Challenge set that's finished the design phase, now it's just testing and fixes before release. That will also free up a decent chunk of time to not have on my plate.

Puzzle #338 - Dual (Doppelblock)

About a week ago I started wondering if it would be possible to create a Doppelblock with only one number for the columns, and another for the rows. It uh... turned out it was possible but extremely unfriendly. I shared this on the Puzzler's Club Discord and it was, in fact, a horrifying monstrosity.

So why am I posting a puzzle here that I've outright stated is unfair? Because with one small change it turns out that not only is it fair, but a nice solve too. I just figured it was worth posting the "pure" version as well because it is unique on its own, which I find quite ridiculous.
Yep, that's all it takes- giving a single cell in an unclued row and column is enough. Enjoy!

Puzzle #252 - Prime Differences (Doppelblock, Prime)

Logic Showcase 20 recently concluded on the Puzzlers Club Discord, which tasked participants with making a number placement puzzle with a non-standard set of digits. The four entries used Fibonacci numbers, prime numbers, inverses, and complex numbers- the puzzle that used inverse numbers was really neat and deserved the win over my prime Doppelblock, which follows standard rules except using the first 6 prime numbers instead of 1-6.
It's probably easier to solve than it was to make.

Puzzle #122 - PiPi (Doppelblock)

I spent most of my pi day doing non-puzzle things, until I did the currently ongoing Puzzle GP round tonight. I still wanted to make a puzzle for pi day, so have a belated Doppelblock puzzle.

Puzzles #116 & #117 - Puzzle Chimera (Doppelblock, Skyscrapers)

I hadn't really tried to construct a chimera before, or a puzzle that works in multiple different genres simultaneously. Doppelblock is a type that I'm trying to understand better, and it pairs well with Skyscrapers. Neither puzzle here is that difficult, but hey- I'm trying to make puzzles I find interesting.

Puzzle #115 - By the Dozen (Doppelblock)

I decided to try to make a larger Doppelblock today. After a few constructing dead ends, I managed to find this one.
For the interested solvers, it turns out that if you change the 4 to a 5, then the column 1 clue is unnecessary. However, I wasn't able to find a solution without casebashing on that version, and the only easy fix gave away a lot more information, so I tried a 4 instead.
