Puzzles #652, #653 & #654 - IPC Round 3 (Killer Doppelblock, Clone Snake)

Like last year, I helped contribute to the Indian Puzzle Championship this year. If you're interested in seeing the rest of the set, including bonus puzzles, check the link for details on how.

Round 3 was themed on taking sudoku variants and applying them to non-sudoku puzzles. I put myself down for number placement, wanting to make a puzzle of a type that has arithmetic normally combined with killer cages. I thought about a few types before settling on Doppelblock. I also signed up for clone Snake since I knew the combination had potential from old, old Islands of Insight rule prototyping. In fact, now that that game isn't getting new content, I know a lot of these old unused puzzles will stay unused, so retain all the rights to them. I've gone through my archive and have about 80 puzzles in this category I think are good enough to share, so at some point I'll have to set up solving interfaces/write rules/share them.

Anyway, Killer Doppelblock! Standard Doppelblock rules apply. Additionally, all the numbers inside a cage add up to the number in the corner of the cage. This is a pretty cool combination, where the different ways of getting partial sums interact in some really cool ways. This was worth 65 points.

Clone Snake: Standard Snake rules apply, with given endpoints and an unknown length. Two cages of the same shape and orientation must have the same arrangement of snake and not snake cells. The first puzzle here is actually one of those old IOI prototype puzzles, since I added it to the organization sheet after a couple failed constructions, to at least have a puzzle in the slot. I put a note that this was from a couple years ago and I didn't think anyone at the IPC would have seen it before. A few hours later, I finally turned up a satisfactory second puzzle, and added that to the sheet to provide an option for which puzzle to use. Prasanna chose both, worth 30 and 50 points.

Puzzles #321 - #326 - Serpent's Tower (Snake and Variations)

A while back I made a Chip's Challenge 2 level featuring a few Snake puzzles, using doppelgangers to enforce walking along the correct path in each room. As a result, these are generally easier than my usual fare as I needed to make sure they were plausible to solve Witness-style without wrong moves!
Naturally, I started very small to introduce the basics. For the authentic experience, start in the bottom right and only shade cells adjacent to there until you're done.
Then I took it a step farther in the level with two possible starting locations (the second was in R7C6). It was supposed to be fairly trivial to determine the correct starting location, and so I've simply put the puzzle here.
Variant puzzle: Form a loop instead of a path. In the level, this room was entered moving right. It might be a little mean as there's a more structural deduction to really get going here.
Variant puzzle: Instead of outside clues, there are numbers inside the grid. These numbers may not be shaded and give the number of shaded cells surrounding them. As usual, this puzzle started at the bottom and was meant to be a step back in difficulty from the prior.
Variant puzzle: In addition to the previous set of rules, the snake must travel straight over all white circles and turn over all gray circles. Designing this puzzle for the CC2 level was extra challenging, as you could only see the bottom half before having to make the first move from the lower left. From that, I made sure that the start was evident from just what was visible.

That was the last Snake puzzle from my CC2 level, but I do have one more lying around as a bonus. Warning: may not have a clean logical path, but it probably does?

I still have another half dozen unposted puzzles I can post soon, though I'll spread those out one at a time.

Puzzle #262 - Sea Serpent (Snake Aquarium)

As the post title indicates, this puzzle is a hybrid of Aquarium and Snake. The solution must meet all requirements of both puzzle types. I thought that this would be an interesting combination as there are a ton of Snake variants out there, and Aquarium was the obvious choice to pair it with as it also has outside clues. Some very different region layouts could lead to some very different logic to be discovered and I kind of hope someone else picks up on this combination in the future. Or I might push it farther, I'm not sure.

Puzzles #208, #209 & #210 - Medusa (Snake)

When I make Snake puzzles, it seems they turn out pretty non-standard. Something about the usual style just doesn't seem to click with me. The first one today is heavily themed around one specific deduction, the second one has no outside clues and a hopefully interesting solve path, and the third one is more visually themed and quite difficult. There do exist a set of reasonable deductions and lookaheads to solve it, though I wouldn't fault anyone if they don't find them.

One more puzzle until I'll start posting the Puzzle Zodiac puzzles here.

Puzzle #194 - Three Out of Five (Snake)

It's kind of amazing how quickly my opinion on Snake puzzles has turned around, now that I understand how to make some deductions in them. I still end up having to try things out to see the implications a lot of the time but I'm getting better- for instance, I made a bad deduction when constructing this puzzle but could easily add a clue to both improve the theme and the solve!

Puzzle #190 - Happy Birthday to Me (Snake)

So, I turn 26 today. A lot of puzzle bloggers in the past have made huge birthday puzzles, but I didn't feel like making another giant yet and still felt like theming a puzzle on my age. After a bit of thought, I went with a Snake puzzle, since 2 clues are quite interesting in the genre.

Puzzle #133 - Sidewinder (Snake)

This is a numberless Snake puzzle. The rules of Snake on puzzlink have an additional rule that white circles are part of the snake, but must not be the head or tail.
