Puzzle #647 - Four One (Tapa)

This is the best puzzle I've ever made. GMPuzzles wishes they could have Tapa puzzles as incredible as this one. Toketa would be jealous of the sheer beauty of this construction.

...what do you mean, it's bashy?

I'd wish you good luck, but solving this puzzle will never happen. It's literally impossible. A lie, a myth, a farce propagated by the government to mislead the ignorant. Anyone who thinks it's possible is stupid and should feel ashamed, and can wallow in their own lack of intelligence. This is an irreversible fact of logic puzzling and simply cannot be challenged. Go cry about it, nerds.

I'm not late for publishing this, it's still April 1st in my time zone!

Puzzle #576 - Tapa (Line)

Serkan posed a challenge to create a 10x10 Tapa Line (Tapa rules + 4 shaded cells in a row is banned) puzzle with as large of an empty space as possible. After the obvious degenerate case of a single shaded cell clued with just one row and column, a couple people tried making serious puzzles. An 8x8 empty middle was found pretty quickly, but I felt 8x9 would be possible. And it was.

The tiebreaker was to be the lowest sum of clues, so a few values are lower than they otherwise need to be. I also showcased a degenerate case that would allow for an arbitrarily large empty region on arbitrarily large grids, even with the constraint that every row and column must have a shaded cell. Really, there is no good formulation of an optimization challenge like this that doesn't end up with a degenerate puzzle allowed!

Puzzles #554 & #555 - Three? (Tapa)

This pair of Tapa puzzles was brought on from playing 14 Minesweeper Variants, specifically Wall and Partition. I knew that 3? could very interesting, both forcing a bit with the 3 and giving some flexibility with the ? part of the clue. The puzzle ended up working out much nicer than I had expected, and I was able to keep clues off of the edge entirely.

Then someone - I don't remember who - said I shouldn't make a "3?" puzzle using only ??? clues. So I made a puzzle using only ??? clues.

Puzzle #491 - Two For One Special (Tapa+Creek)

Parker (or Mr_ParK3r2) really likes a couple of puzzle types in particular. Creek because it's simple and fun, and Tapa because... I don't actually know why but who doesn't like a good Tapa puzzle? So I made a puzzle with both Creek and Tapa clues that must obey all rules of both puzzles. There's a couple things that this implies that I ensured were not required for the solve as I don't think Parker knows those puzzling tricks, so this one is definitely on the easier side.

Full rules: Shade some cells so all shaded cells are connected and all unshaded cells are connected. No 2x2 area may be entirely shaded. Clues inside cell centers give the lengths of all groups of shaded cells in the up to 8 cells surrounding them, and may not be shaded. Clues on vertices give the number of shaded cells in the up to 4 cells touching that vertex.

Puzzles #464 - 472 - Counting with Tapa

One night, a friend was doing some Tapa puzzles. I decided to make one for them afterwards. And by one, I mean 9 with the same ideas. Because it amused me.

Puzzles #403, #404 & #405 - Light Tapas

I actually made these three Tapa puzzles a few weeks ago. The first was the result of trying to find a neat antisymmetric design, the second came after playing around with latticed ?? clues in pzprrt (but made by hand later), and the third was just because I wanted to make a standard Tapa afterward. No extra tricks.

The 111 clue in the last one wrinkles a little bit, but I couldn't find another nice way to make the theme resolve. I normally avoid "21", instead formatting it as 12, but it just had to be 21 here.

Puzzle #385 - Triple Question (Tapa)

First up: I haven't made a post in a while because I most of the puzzles I've been making can't be publicly shared- at some point I'll have a lot of puzzles available to post, but that day is kind of far off for two separate projects- arguably three, but I haven't really started on the third yet. Too many other things first!

Second, semiexp added several new puzzle types to pzprRT, and Tapa was among them. I was curious how powerful touching question marks could be after my T pentomino Tapa from a while back, and ended up with this puzzle. It's pretty tricky, I think, but overall fair with some good structural insights.

Puzzle #361 - Hexagony Tapa

Making a Tapa on a hexagonal grid was something that I'd wanted to do for quite a while, and Hexagony was the perfect opportunity to make it.

I started with the 12 and 3 clues for their interaction- similar to a 14 and 4 in regular Tapa. Once I had that starting point in place, it was a lot of fun to try to work the rest of the grid around the outer edges. This solve path is probably one of my favorites in the whole contest, though there's a few that I'm much happier with the construction of.

Puzzle #351 - Tapa-Like Pentominous

Logic Showcase 25 recently concluded, with tasked people with taking Tapa style clues and mixing them with another puzzle type that doesn't normally have them. I immediately knew I wanted to make a region division puzzle, and settled on Pentominous since I thought it would give the right amount of push and pull. The rules for this puzzle are simple: divide the grid up into pentominoes, so that pentominoes that are the same shape do not share an edge. Numbered clues give the continuous sizes of regions around that clue.
The vertex clues were a really sad addition that I needed to disambiguate the corners at the end- I tried a lot of different options, from giving a few borders, to a pair of cipher clues, to adding an outer frame and placing clues there, to reworking existing clue values to force things, and nothing else really worked as well for the logic. It's a bit of a kludge but I still think the solve is nice.

Puzzles #332 - #335 - Small Packages (Variety)

With the results for Logic Showcase 22 out (I did not do well and I have literally no idea why), I can finally share my entries for it. First up is a chimera I've wanted to make for a long time, Tapa and Tapa-Like Loop! For a while I wasn't sure if it was going to be possible to make one of these on a 6x6 grid that wasn't trivial, but I managed to find this arrangement using a couple question marks to bridge the gaps. I'm honestly shocked that this didn't do better, I think it was one of the best puzzles entered in the showcase since an interesting chimera on both sides is tough enough without the size restriction.

I also made a standard Minarism with a nice flow and visual theme. It's nothing too special, but there's nothing wrong with simple, elegant designs.

Lastly, I made a last minute Pentominous with some tricky bits to pin down, themed on the word UNITY. The Tapa chimera was definitely my favorite of the entries yet all three of these received the same amount of votes.

Puzzles #305 - #316 - Pentomino Puzzle Pack

Yes, you did in fact read that right- this post contains 12 puzzles. I had an idea for a pentomino themed set and yesterday, decided to see if I could get the entire pack together that day. I managed to construct all 12 puzzles and left the testing for today, fixed a few errors I had made, and here it is. I'm extremely proud of this set even without the fact that I put it together in a day.

Get the puzzle pack here!

This post won't have preview images or rules for each puzzle, but I will link them all here. The pack has a penpa link with answer check and rules written in alongside an image, so the pack can be solved physically or digitally without issue. The U puzzle has the variant of unequal lengths.

F  I  L  N  P  T  U  V  W  X  Y  Z

puzz.links for PW and X can also be used. There was no way to make one for Z, unfortunately. Comments after the break.

Puzzle #101 - Cipher Matchmaker

I signed up for the Puzzlers' Club Secret Solver event this past December, and was tasked with making a puzzle for pwahs, who is one of the top solvers at the WPC. That was intimidating. From what little I knew from the signup spreadsheet, I knew that the best type of puzzle to make would be a shading puzzle of some sort, and one single puzzle (even a large one) seemed a bit underwhelming. My solver set a high bar, and so I wanted to reach for it- so I decided on a Matchmaker puzzle. A few days later after picking types I had an outlandish idea. Why not attempt a Cipher Matchmaker, something that I couldn't find another example of anywhere? Would it be possible?

Yes.

Rules for each type are linked here: Cave | Kurotto | Nurikabe | Tapa | Tasquare

After some initially planning, making and testing this took about 10-15 hours. If you're interested in a semi-detailed, spoiler filler breakdown of how I made this puzzle or a video walkthrough I made then feel free to check them out, or if you just want to solve the deciphered puzzles then those will be linked below. I would highly recommend giving the full puzzle a serious attempt before checking either of these, however.

Puzzle #98 - Tapa (1)

Tapa is a good genre. It's also very common, but less so in the database. I'm running out of things to say.

Puzzle #75 - Top O' the Tapa

Alright, time for a bit of a break on posting puzzles again, but first one more Tapa puzzle. I decided to try to make this one 17x17 (previous largest posted grids being 13x13 and the 15x15 Akari) and it's actually the largest grid by area I've constructed yet.

Thanks for reading this far! I don't have any concrete plans for what I want to post here next, but I do have a couple of separate puzzle related projects either complete and waiting for someone else, or currently in progress.

Puzzle #73 - Questionable (Tapa)

??? ??????? ?? Tapa ????????? ?? ?????. ?????????????? ? ?? ??? ? ??? ????? ? ???! ???. Remember that question marks indicate an unknown, non-zero number.
For some reason, this was the easiest Tapa to make yet.

Puzzle #72 - Seeing Double (Tapa)

Multi-digit Tapa clues can be tough to get a handle on when solving but then give a lot of information. It turns out that they're even tougher to get a handle on when constructing!
The rules link doesn't cover ? clues, which behave as an unknown non-zero number to be determined while solving. Yes, that means that the ? ? clue ends up forced by the surrounding clues. It's possible to make a Tapa entirely out of ? clues...

Puzzle #71 - Insert Tapa Pun Here

As the title indicates, today's puzzle is a Tapa puzzle. Tapa used to be my favorite logic puzzle, before I started playing around with LITS and region division puzzles more. I... may have solved the entirety of the Tapa selection on Otto Janko's site before the advent of the puzz.link database.
